Why I like this book: "The Help" is my other selection for this year. It is set in the 1960s, in the South, where people still had servants. Although I grew up in the '60s, what was going on in the South was as far away as the moon - you heard about it, but didn't really relate to it. "Skeeter" the main character, is drawn into the lives of "the help" when her nanny disappears from her life without any explanation. As she attempts to find out what happened, she realizes how much racism still is alive in the South. The best part of the story is when the readers are given the special recipe for "chocolate pie".

Summary:

Three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step.Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken. (retrieved from Amazon Fri, 24 Apr 2009 07:57:53 -0400)
